WebMD: Erectile Dysfunction: Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Testosterone is a hormone produced by the testicles and is responsible for the proper development of male sexual characteristics. Testosterone is also important for maintaining muscle bulk, adequate levels of red blood cells, bone growth, a sense of well-being, and sexual function.

Inadequate production of testosterone is not a common cause of erectile dysfunction; however, when ED does occur due to decreased testosterone production, testosterone replacement therapy may improve the problem.

As a man ages, the amount of testosterone in his body gradually declines. This natural decline starts after age 30 and continues throughout life. Other causes of low testosterone levels include:

The significance of testosterone decline is controversial and poorly understood.

Without adequate testosterone, a man may lose his sex drive, experience erectile dysfunction, feel depressed, have a decreased sense of well-being, and have difficulty concentrating.

Low testosterone can cause the following physical changes:

The only accurate way to detect the condition is to have your doctor measure the amount of testosterone in your blood. Because testosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day, several measurements will need to be taken to detect a deficiency. Doctors prefer, if possible, to test levels early in the morning since this is when testosterone levels are at their highest.

Testosterone deficiency can be treated by:

Each of these options provides adequate levels of hormone replacement; however, they all have different advantages and disadvantages. Talk to your doctor to see which approach may be right for you.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy: Testosterone Injections …

Many aging men with low testosterone report improved energy levels, sex drive, and mood after testosterone treatment. If testosterone is low, why not replace it?

Not so fast. A low testosterone level by itself doesn't need treatment. Testosterone replacement therapy can have side effects, and the long-term risks and benefits aren't known. Only men with symptoms of low testosterone and blood levels that confirm this as the cause of symptoms should consider testosterone replacement. Talking with your doctor is the only way to know if testosterone therapy is right for you.

The symptoms of low testosterone are sometimes obvious, but can be subtle. Testosterone levels decline naturally in men as they age over decades, and symptoms may appear slowly. Low testosterone symptoms include:

If a man has symptoms of low testosterone and tests show he has a low testosterone level, a doctor may suggest treatment. For millions of men who have low testosterone levels but no symptoms, no treatment is currently recommended.

Testosterone replacement therapy is available in several forms. All can improve testosterone levels:

Why not a simple testosterone pill? Oral testosterone is available. However, some experts believe oral testosterone can have negative effects on the liver. Using other methods, such as skin patches, gels, orally disintegrating tablets, or injections, bypasses the liver and gets testosterone into the blood directly.

What can you expect from testosterone treatment? It's impossible to predict, because every man is different. Many men report improvement in energy level, sex drive, and quality of erections. Testosterone also increases bone density, muscle mass, and insulin sensitivity in some men.

Men also often report an improvement in mood from testosterone replacement. Whether these effects are barely noticeable, or a major boost, is highly individualized.

Karen Herbst, MD, PhD, an endocrinologist at University of California-San Diego, specializes in testosterone deficiency. She estimates about one in 10 men are "ecstatic" about their response to testosterone therapy, while about the same number "don't notice much." The majority have generally positive, but varying responses to testosterone replacement.

Low testosterone levels affect women as well as men. Women may experience loss of sex drive, weaker orgasms, lethargy, loss of energy and endurance, and brittle bones. Men may suffer from infertility, diminished libido, erectile dysfunction, changes in body composition, reduction in facial and body hair, osteoporosis, impaired masculization, fatigue, depression, anger and confusion. While pharmaceuticals are often used to combat low levels of testosterone, many people prefer to use the natural approaches that are also available to increase their testosterone levels.

To replace testosterone naturally, consider one of two kinds of herbal supplements: non-estrogenic herbs and phytoestrogenic herbs. According to, non-estrogenic herbs work best to restore your hormone balance. According to, non-estrogenic herbs do not contain any chemical structures similar to estrogen, but nevertheless they feed the endocrine system and balance hormones as a result. The non-estrogenic herb Macafem does a good job of maintaining hormonal balance. Macafem is grown in Peru and is a hardy perennial. This herb has an effect on the pituitary and endocrine glands, stimulating hormone production and helping you make your own natural hormones.

Foods that will naturally introduce testosterone into your system include radishes, cabbage, turnips, beef, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, garlic, oysters, eggs and cauliflower. Try to eat some or all of these items on a regular basis to increase your testosterone level.

Another approach to naturally increasing testosterone is to take an herbal supplement called tribulus terrestris. According to, tribulus terrestris increases testosterone by increasing the levels of luteinizing hormones in men and women. After the luteinizing hormones are increased, the secretion of sex steroids in males and females is stimulated. The luteinizing hormones bind to the receptors, stimulating synthesis and secretion of testosterone. In women, the cells of the ovary are stimulated.

Essential fatty acids will improve your testosterone levels, so make sure to eat peanuts, avocados, canola oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil and fish. If you are deficient in essential fats, your body can't produce the needed amount of testosterone. Testosterone is made from cholesterol, according to The best diet for increasing testosterone is made up of high protein, moderate fat and low carbohydrates.

The primary function of phytoestrogenic herbs is to relieve symptoms of menopause, according to Many of these symptoms are caused by low levels of estrogen, the female hormone. The best phytoestrogenic herbs include black cohosh, gingko biloba, dong quai and red clover. There are, however, some medical concerns about phytoestrogenic herbs because they add hormones to the body, which could conceivably produce bad results, including breast cancer.

As men grow older, their bodies begin to manufacture less of the hormone testosterone. When testosterone levels drop, less sperm is produced...

Testosterone Side Effects from Testosterone Replacement …

Testosterone Side Effects in Men

Its important to know that if youve had prostate cancer or breast cancer you are absolutely not a candidate for testosterone therapy. Testosterone can make either of these cancers grow faster.

Decreasing testosterone levels has been a method used to treat diseases related to both the "benign" and the cancerous groups of cells, but it is still unclear whether testosterone therapy for the older man places him at increased risk of developing prostate disease (i.e., whether testosterone replacement therapy makes benign prostatic hyperplasia progress or makes previously unknown prostate, or sub-clinical, cancer spread).

The vast majority of studies following PSA (prostate specific antigen made by both cancer cells - at a higher rate - and benign prostate cells) show that it does not increase significantly with testosterone therapy. All of the short-term studies have shown no negative effects on prostate size, maximum urination flow rates and prostate symptom scores. It appears that testosterone replacement therapy has little short-term effect on the prostate. However, long-term data is as yet not available.

The possibilities of testosterone therapy are enticing increase your muscle mass, sharpen your memory and concentration, boost your libido, and improve your energy level. As you get older, testosterone therapy may sound like the ultimate anti-aging formula. Yet the health benefits of testosterone therapy for age-related decline in testosterone aren't as clear as they may seem. Find out what's known and not known about testosterone therapy for normal aging.

Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily in the testicles. Testosterone helps maintain men's:

Hypogonadism is a disease in which the body is unable to produce normal amounts of testosterone due to a problem with the testicles or with the pituitary gland that controls the testicles. Testosterone replacement therapy can improve the signs and symptoms of low testosterone in these men. Doctors may prescribe testosterone as injections, pellets, patches or gels.

Testosterone peaks during adolescence and early adulthood. As you get older, your testosterone level gradually declines typically about 1 percent a year after age 30. It is important to determine in older men if a low testosterone level is simply due to the decline of normal aging or if it is due to a disease (hypogonadism).

Not necessarily. Men can experience many signs and symptoms as they age. Some may occur as a result of lower testosterone levels and can include:

It's important to note that some of these signs and symptoms are a normal part of aging. Others can be caused by various underlying factors, including medication side effects, thyroid problems, depression and excessive alcohol use. A blood test is the only way to diagnose a low testosterone level.

Reclaim Your Energy and Sex Drive | Testosterone …

Reclaim Your Energy and Sex Drive Reclaim Your Youthful Energy and Sex Drive!

Low testosterone levels commonly known as Low T, Hypogonadism & Andropause . . . find a doctor. The condition can produce devastating symptoms that include dramatically reduced sex drive, weight gain and a loss of energy and enthusiasm just to name a few.

Just because lower testosterone is associated with natural aging doesnt mean you have to accept a lower quality of life. To reduce or even eliminate the debilitating symptoms of Low T, Dr. Lionel Bissoon evaluates and treats the condition in both men and women.

Although low levels of testosterone are often associated with older men, testosterone levels begin naturally declining at about age 30. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that even younger people can be candidates for testosterone replacement therapy.

One of the first symptoms of lower testosterone is a decrease in libido. Reduced sex drive is a sign that there isnt enough testosterone present in the circulating blood. Unfortunately, patients with decreased libido and other Low T symptoms are often told by physicians that their testosterone falls within normal levels for their age group, and are sometimes denied testosterone replacement treatment.

Theres just one problem with this diagnosis: the difference between high and low normal is significant. Because of this, many men experience low-testosterone symptoms when their testosterone level falls below 50% of the median range for their age group.

Dr. Bissoons approach is to evaluate patients symptoms as well as their blood test results to determine who will benefit from testosterone replacement therapy. In other words, Dr. Bissoon listens to his patients to ensure they live healthier, happier lives.

Testosterone replacement treatment can produce transformative results, assuming there are no other underlying medical problems. Thus, Dr. Bissoon will perform a complete medical evaluation to assess your testosterone (and other hormone) levels.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy – Testosterone Treatment

Testosterone is a major sex hormone produced in the testes of men. The pituitary gland is responsible for controlling the production of testosterone hormone. In the testes, luteinizing hormone binds to receptors on Leydig cells; this stimulates production and secretion of testosterone. Testosterone helps to develop the primary and secondary sexual characteristics in males. Development of sex organs, deeper voice, muscle mass, and facial hair all result from the sufficient production of this hormone. Testosterone deficiency as happens with age needs effective testosterone treatment.

Along with the development of sexual features, testosterone hormone also controls the following actions in a body:

With age, testosterone production declines, thus disturbing overall body functioning. Low levels of testosterone hormone lead to a condition termed as hypogonadism that can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy. Hypogonadism can be divided into two categories depending on the occurrence of pathology.

Primary Hypogonadism: It occurs at testicular level with high release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and low release of testosterone.

Secondary Hypogonadism: It occurs at pituitary hypothalamic level with low or in some cases normal release of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone along with low levels of testosterone hormone.

Testosterone replacement therapy effectively works to improve upon the conditions of primary and secondary hypogonadism.

Along with aging, there are some other factors that contribute toward low testosterone production and make a man go for testosterone treatment.

Deficient testosterone hormone levels can lead to many undesirable symptoms, like poor libido, lack of vitality, erectile dysfunction, declining muscle mass, osteoporosis, loss of body hair, depression, lower blood hemoglobin, memory loss, poor concentration, mood swings, mild anemia, disturbed cholesterol profile and a decrease in cognitive function that effects all of your activities. Testosterone therapy is the only possible way to cope with testosterone deficiency.

Before start of the testosterone treatment, there should be the right detection of the hormone deficiency. If you consult an expert doctor for testosterone therapy, he may prescribe you the blood test in the morning because testosterone levels are at peak during that time.

We, at Nationwide Synergy Inc, provide patients with best available options to treat their hormone deficiency.
